In 2021 the Parish Council launched a general initiative to increase awareness of the importance of managing all our homes and our surroundings to support wildlife as much as possible.
This has been echoed by a number of national and local campaigns. At the end of 2020 Contryfile lauched an initiative ‘Plant Britain’ to plant 750,00 trees across the UK (https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/55088146). It will be running for two years and the goal is fight against climate change and plant 750,000 trees.
Gardener’s World recently highlighted that 70% of ponds had disappeared in the UK in recent years. Creating even a small pond can be one of the most important wildlife environments you can create in your garden. If space is limited you do not need a pond liner. Just a submerged planter, bowl, or similar can create an attractive area for wildlife.
Natural Cambridgeshire (naturalcambridgeshire.org.uk) want to double the amount of land that is managed for nature and asking for help through their Pledge for Nature scheme.
The aim, by doubling the area of rich wildlife habitats and natural green space in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, is to become an outstanding environment where nature and people thrive, and businesses prosper.
So please think what you can do, however small, to help wildlife over the course of the next year, and the Easton Parish Council has agreed if there are enough enties to put up a prize for the most beneficial idea that is put into practice. This will be judged by our independant local wildlife expert. We would love to build up a collection of the rich and varied local widlife we have around Easton, so please use the ‘Contact us’ form on the above link to if you wish to send in any photos and we will confirm the email address to send these to.
